Description

This beautiful, upright evergreen shrub is ideal for privacy borders or a garden specimen. The dense growth provides year-round privacy and shelters birds without pruning. New growth features delicate, silvery-blue needles in star-like clusters for a sparkling look. It is salt and drought-tolerant once established. Birds adore its blue-purple winter berries. Best in full sun and well-drained soil, avoiding low or wet spots

Plant Care

Water

Moist, well-drained soil

Fertilizer

In early spring, just as new growth begins to emerge, use a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer like 10-10-10. Do not fertilize after mid-summer as it encourages tender new growth that will be killed by the first winter frost.

Pruning

Pruning is not recommended. This plant will maintain its shape and density with no pruning. Remove dead or damaged branches any time with clean, sharp pruners.

Seasons of Interest

The season begins as a showstopper when the plant sparkles with star-like clusters of shimmering, silvery-blue new growth. This bright flush covers the branch tips, creating a luminous, glowing effect that wakes up the entire landscape.

The intense, star-like spring tips settle into a rich, uniform blue-green framework. Because of its waxy needle texture, the foliage beautifully shimmers and reflects sunlight on hot, bright summer days, holding its cool tone better than standard green evergreens.

As autumn temperatures arrive, the foliage goes through a striking shift, taking on a unique burgundy or purplish cast. This cool-season color transformation deepens right as the plant prepares for winter dormancy, providing an excellent dark contrast against changing deciduous trees.

When frost sets in, the dense foliage transforms into a cozy wildlife sanctuary, loaded with rich, blue-purple berries. These winter berries offer an essential food source, while the tight branch structure provides secure shelter for local songbirds against harsh freezing winds.
